Some exfoliation clarification

We’ve had exfoliation on our minds since we started developing our new exfoliating pads. Each of our three formulas act differently, so let’s look a little closer at how they affect our skin.

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells to reveal healthy, radiant skin. Physical exfoliators (think gritty scrubs) are too harsh to be helpful, so we turn to chemical exfoliants for our desired glow.

These chemical exfoliants are acids; alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) and beta hydroxy acids (BHA) show up in the formulas for Swipe Bright, Gleam On and Porefection Pro.

AHAs are recommended for normal to dry skin and for those with sun damage. These acids enhance natural moisturizing factors within the skin. They also stimulate collagen production, reducing the appearance of fine lines and other signs of aging. Swipe Bright, our brightening pad, contains mandelic acid and lactic acid, which are both AHAs. Gleam On, our vitamin C pads, also contain botanical fruit-based AHAs.

BHAs exfoliate by getting into pores and cutting through the gunk and oil that cause acne. This makes them perfect for those with oily or acne-prone skin. Salicylic acid is the most popular BHA, and it appears in many acne treatments, including Porefection Pro.

So how do we choose the best formula? It all depends on your skin concerns. Those with dry skin might be happiest with an AHA formula. Those with acne-prone skin might want a BHA. Still not sure which exfoliant is best for you and your skin? Ask your SkinGloss aesthetician for guidance at your next appointment!
