Today we're covering a very popular ingredient you probably have seen everyyyywhere! Maybe you know a little, maybe you know a lot. Let's chat about Hyaluronic Acid ?
This ingredient is extremely beneficial to holding water to the skin - making it a hydrator vs a moisturizer (watch the video over the difference between the two here). It can bind water to the skin 1000X its own weight!

What it's all about
It is a natural chemical that is produced within your own body. It is found in your bones and joints to keep them lubricated, as well as your eye sockets and skin.
Not only can we benefit from it on the skin - but also orally as some supplements have hyaluronic acid combined with other ingredients such as collagen and magnesium. Since it is found in your bones - it is GREAT for your bones! It aids in things like osteoporosis and arthritis.
HA is also used as a filler - and it's safer than the alternative toxic fillers used as it can be made safely and synthetically in a lab. It is good to help fight anti-aging, reduce wrinkles and plump the skin as age and loose volume.
Hyaluronic Acid is a large molecule - you may see it also called Sodium Hyaluronate - it is the salt from hyaluronic acid and is much smaller that can easily penetrate the skin.
How we use it in the skin
HA can also be extremely versatile. In the treatment room it is used for all sorts of barrier and hydration issues. Like I always say- we fight the fire (oil) with water to calm redness and irritation. If you feel extremely sensitive and reactive. Chances are, you are probably dehydrated.
Having the oil and water create the perfect combination helps that barrier become stronger. Alyssa Miller Beauty has Nourish oil and Drench mist as the dynamic duo to help your skin balance the barrier. Water + oil = Heaven.
I see it on the daily. 99.9% of people that come into my treatment room NEED WATER. Even if you feel like you're drinking plenty, your skin can still be dehydrated topically. That's where I come in!
Hyaluronic Acid isn’t the only hydrating serum, I also carry the Betaboost serum that has Beta Glucan. Both are hydrating and help to repair redness, acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema and more.
If you have skin issues such as eczema or extreme dryness - HA can burn originally. But, that isn’t necessarily bad. Your skin absorbs water quickly and it can hit the nerve endings really fast, making you feel a burning or tingling sensation. (If the product continues to irritate after several uses, discontinue use).
To sum it up
Hyaluronic Acid can also be taken orally - for joint pain and mouth health acid reflux and dry eye (mouth health is important as it directly affects low level inflammation, acid reflux and immune diseases in the body), it can be injected as filler instead of toxins, and also applied topically for sensitive skin, dryness and much more.
Check with your esthetician first - but this ingredient is one you can't go wrong with!
